Responsive Web Design – what does it mean to your business?
What is Responsive web design and why is it important?
Firstly, lets quickly cover what responsive website design actually means. Responsive website design came about because of changes of how we view online content, namely the shift from desktop and laptop computers to mobile and smaller devices such as mobile phones and tablets. Responsive web design is an approach to web design aimed at developing websites to provide an optimal experience across a wide range of devices, from desktop computer monitors to mobile phones.
So what does this mean to you? Imagine trying to view content designed to fit a large laptop screen on a small mobile device such as an iPhone, its going to look very squashed and very small and the user is going to leave your site pretty quickly and more than likely go elsewhere.
When responsive design is done properly the on screen content can be rearranged or reduced in size to suit the viewing of the content on smaller screens. You can still display all the information you need to, but in a much clearer and simple way.
An example of where a non responsive website might cost you a sale, lead or booking. Imagine someone is searching online using their mobile phone for a local restaurant, they navigate to the first search listing (hopefully yours) only to find that the website is impossible to read as it’s all squashed onto a tiny screen, they leave the site within seconds and go to the next search listing, the website they arrive at is responsive, has a clear navigation menu and a contact number in a prominent position with an easy to access food menu, guess who they will call first?
